FAO/WHO

In 2006 the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) jointly published a report on nutrient risk assessment, as the internationally accepted approach for the safety evaluation of vitamins and minerals. The principles, which share those of the IADSA 2004 publication 'Safety of Vitamin and Mineral Supplements', favour the increasing scientific consensus that upper safe levels should be established by scientific risk assessment based on generally accepted scientific data, and that safe Upper Levels (UL) based on arbitrary multiples of Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) have no scientific validity.

RDAs have in the past been used by national regulatory authorities as the basis for setting safe upper levels for vitamins and minerals.

When used in conjunction with each other, the FAO/WHO nutrient risk assessment report and the IADSA publication (below) give the regulator access to the fundamental data to make key decisions on maximum levels for vitamins and minerals.
